a black American President and a female Australian Prime Minister …. how good is that? I was beginning to despair that neither would happen in my lifetime – but, as usual, things happen when least expected. Julia Gillard’s elevation brings a whole new meaning to the expression “a week is a long time in politics”. Whilst I hate to see a Labor Prime Minister humiliated, and I do feel sorry for Kevin Rudd, a leadership change was needed if Labor is to hold power at the next election. Let’s hope Julia can tread the narrow path between compromise necessary to maintain government and adherence to Labor principles. And Kevin should be congratulated for accepting the inevitability of the numbers and allowing the transfer of power to proceed smoothly without the usual bloodbath. Let’s hope that he remains a force for good and not a white ant ….
